Dancing in the desert is fun. I know I do it all the time. I also like to sit in my bathtub and stare at postcards from the other side of the world. But that's another story.
After her departure from Girls Generation (SNSD), Jessica has released her first solo album and her lead single Fly. It's a shame we can't fly away from this location choice.
The music video for Fly doesn't scream "I'm-so-happy-I-left-SNSD-and-can-go-solo-now." This music video, shot in California has Jessica sitting in a bathtub, in the desert, fantasizing about travelling to some far off place with snow and ice.
It's a shame that the video isn't more inventive. For Jessica's leaving a group, it's an uninspired video that fails to encompass the full meaning of her new single.
U.S. rapper Fabolous would have lit up an otherwise dull video. Except he's not in it. We just get to hear some quick bars of his beautiful voice. It comes off as out of place because of his absence from the video, but his rap breaks away from the repetitive chorus and compliments the message of the song.
The song, on the other hand, is actually great. Jessica has embraced a “Westernised” concept for her first solo, with a sound and chorus not dissimilar to music from the American music industry. Can't forget the fact that Fabolous raps in English either.
Although I don’t listen to a lot of English songs, Fly is convincing me to consider otherwise. The song has a nice melody and positive lyrics that you can easily pick up and sing along to.
"You’re a hero you can fly" is a particular favourite. How great does Jessica sound while singing this line with her clean, charming voice? Fabolous comes out in the mid-end of the song his rap, enhancing and diversifying the song allowing it to challenge the notion of what a "normal" KPOP song is.
If you ever feel like travelling, this song is for you. But if you are one of those people that think visuals should accompany audio, then you're out of luck.
