BoA and Beenzino recently released ‘No Matter What’ for SM Station, and let’s just say it was quite new as a Kpop song.

They took a new approach with the music video – instead of featuring the pretty BoA and the cool Beenzino, they went for a new style and used animations. It was fairly interesting as it was new and very colourful – they definitely put a lot of effort into this music video. But I also gotta admit, I found myself not paying attention to the music video after a while. I would have preferred actual faces rather than animated, non-asian looking characters.

The music grows on you. I have to admit, I didn’t like it at first. But as I continued listening to it more and more, No Matter What became addictive. A groovy EDM song, easy to sway along to. With BoA’s smooth vocals and Beenzino’s rap towards the end of the song, you can’t complain. But if you’re a Justin Bieber or Drake’s fan, you would have noticed that it sounded much like Justin Bieber’s What Do You Mean? (the beats) and Drake’s One Dance (some parts of the verses). Merging these popular music styles across an EDM beat may seem different enough, but I could still tell where SM stitched together the pieces from.

As for Beenzino, he killed it as a feature and really brought this song home.

Here's to hoping the next SM Station song has less animation and more people.
