Regardless of whether you’re into rap or not, I guarantee this track will hit you hard every. single. time.

The 22-year-old rapper out of Chicago, Vic Mensa, released a fresh music video to the title track of his new EP, There’s Alot Going On. The self-directed video features Mensa rapping against a white screen. Its simplicity highlights the various emotions that play across Mensa’s face, and through his posture during the song.

Physically and lyrically, Mensa is incredibly expressive, making you feel as if you’re right there with him as he releases his pent up anger, isolation, sadness and burning ambition into one of the realest tracks ever.

Right from the start, as Mensa shouts to whatever divine beings are out there, “Know I never die/We live forever in my mind”, through to the very end, with gunshots ringing out and bullet holes framing Mensa’s body, I was speechless.

The track is highly personal, heavily political, and with minimal wordplay. There’s Alot Going On brings you into the heart of Mensa’s struggles throughout his career thus far. Mensa covers drugs, violence, relationships and mental health - topics well beyond what you’d expect an average 22-year-old to understand to this extent. I actually had to listen to the track a few times to let its message properly sink in.

You'll discover that, through the fame and the thrill of being able to work with his idols, Mensa was really just wearing a mask to conceal severe depression. But despite this, he tells us that “If you learn one thing from my journey, n*gga it’s don’t stop believing”. After hearing this, it’s impossible not to have the maddest respect for Vic Mensa, as both an artist and an individual.

There's Alot Going On is a phenomenal track filled with so much raw emotion. it's thought provoking, powerful and bold, and quite frankly, we need more music that's as real as this.
