It’s like the Breakfast Club, but with Koreans.

Justin Chon, of Twilight notoriety, stars in Benson Lee’s Seoul Searching about a group of elsewhere-raised teenagers sent to a Korean summer camp, in 1986, to learn about their heritage. It has everything that your classic John Hughes movie contains, but with an Asian cast and, possibly, with more cheek.

The trailer starts off by roll calling the main characters like in an 1980/90s teen comedy show, soundtracked by a generic modern coming-of-age, indie track. That transitions into a more 80s-type of track, that accompanies a cliche montage that’s constantly showing a bit too much. Add the angst, drama, slow-mo, crying and reflective voiceover and you have yourself a nostalgic teenage flick.

Seoul Searching is a film that looks like it’ll be able to transcend generations, because it has that timeless feel of a John Hughes movie. Lee gets it so stereotypically 1980s correct; teenagers decked out in oversized clothes, big hair and obnoxiously eccentric prints. But this trailer looks like it’s giving away some major plot lines. Hopefully, when this movie drops in the next month, it offers more than what was seen in the trailer.
