Starboy is the first single from the Weeknd’s upcoming album of the same name.

Who?

You know…the legendary R&B artist with the iconic wicked wing-looking hair that sings that sensual song from Fifty Shades of Grey.

Starboy is The Weeknd starting a new chapter in his life. He's as big as big gets, but maybe he doesn't want to be big. He wants a fresh start. He’s done with the indulgence of materialistic things. He doesn’t want to make pop music anymore. He doesn’t want to make music for awards like Beauty Behind the Madness did. But he doesn’t necessarily want to return to his Trilogy roots either. Starboy sounds pretty pop still, particularly due to Daft Punk’s influence who have taken a more mainstream style since Random Access Memories. He wants to make music that he wants to, not for the purpose of winning awards.

The music video begins with his murder and his awakening. With a new haircut, the motifs of the cross and the smashing of his old records and belongings, The Weeknd is done with his stardom life. His dancing, the use of gloves and the panther channels Michael Jackson uses exquisitely. This is the most alive he has been seen in his music videos and it’s clear to say he’s ready to show us his rebirth.

The dark colours and the neon lights create a very retro feel and appropriately suits the style of the song. The end scene with the McLaren P1 is reminiscent to Tron Legacy, which was scored by Daft Punk as well. This scene is absolutely stunning and I’m excited to see the journey that The Weeknd embarks on.

P.S. The Daft Punk painting with the panther is glorious.
