RECAP: SILICON VALLEY, S3EP6 – LOVE, SEX AND MONEY

Richard finds love. Jared has sex. Erlich had money. The key word being “had”, but more on that later.

There are two very important things we learn from this week’s episode. One, Richard likes to use tabs over spaces and when I say “like” I mean that tabs are the only way to get shit done. And two, Richard can get a girl’s number. A pretty girl. A girl who is definitely not a bartender and also codes. A match made in heaven if you will.

Where a leader goes, his followers follow. So Dinesh and Jared both go on their own woman finding adventures too. Dinesh and Elisabet (one of the new Pied Piper employees) flirt with each other over webcam and honestly its cute. Its nice to see Dinesh not get shit on for once. Unfortunately, when they switch over to a higher resolution webchat, Elisabet sees Dinesh’s face clearly for the first time and basically ends it right there. Of course a moment like this wouldn’t be complete without Gilfoyle’s input which honestly was savage. So much savagery. You feel a bit bad for Dinesh but hey, at least his mum still calls him.

“Either she froze time, met and married the man of her dreams, unfroze time and hopped back into Vidchat with you or you’re the dog face. Which do you think it is? I’m on the fence.”

Jared on the other hand is a player. He was easily the best part of the episode. Out of no where Jared screws women left and right. No one sees it coming. No one except one person that is, Russ Hanneman. It’s a great throwback to season 2 when Dinesh says “Russ was right, this guy fucks” and just in case you’ve forgotten, I’ve included a nice gif for you.

Back to Richard’s story though. He meets a girl called Winnie. A fellow coder who works at Facebook and things are looking good for them. That is until we find out that Winnie uses spaces instead of tabs. At that point its too late to save this relationship and Richard basically argues with her about which is the better format. It plays out as a comical fight with an unexpected outcome but I guess love just isn't in the script for Richard right now. It's nice for Richard not to be the sole focus of the episode. It really gave the series some breathing room as we stepped away from his character and had a look at the other guys more in depth.

The main plot focused on Erlich and Big Head but starts with Gavin. Gavin Belson faces the backlash of his Hooli scrubbing idea with protestors gathering outside his workplace. In one of the funniest and most well written scenes of the show, Gavin attempts to find possible solutions for their protestor problems through murder.

Gavin: You know 100 years ago, men like me could’ve had people like that killed.Times sure have changed… or have they?Of course they have, and for the better.Unless…

Gavin: You know 100 years ago, men like me could’ve had people like that killed.

Times sure have changed… or have they?

Of course they have, and for the better.

Unless…

Gavin wisely chooses to sue the reporter who wrote the article (as opposed to burning her alive) unless she gives up her source which links in to Erlich and Big Head’s story for the week.

Erlich plans a party at Alcatraz using Big Head’s money as basically a giant fuck you to any one who underestimated him in the past. Unfortunately for him, this money is at risk if Belson finds out Big Head was the one who talked. In a seemingly smart investment decision, Erlich buys the blog to ensure the reporter’s silence for a mere $500,000. (“We practically stole it right?”) The rest of Big Head’s money goes into the party and that is where we find out that they are both officially broke now. For an episode named after the main event, Bachmanity Insanity, the party itself was a let down on the whole considering it was on screen for about 2 minutes total. Gotta admit though, the ending line of the whole episode was hysterical.

Erlich: AlohaBig Head: Uh that means hello… oh, and goodbye

Erlich: Aloha

Big Head: Uh that means hello… oh, and goodbye

The episode was amazing. Most shows get a bit dull midseason. Silicon Valley decides to push itself. Hopefully the momentum of great episodes continues on into the 2nd half of the season.
